The music from the grand hall reached all the way up there, muffled by the thickness of the velvet curtains. Venice outside the window was a shimmer of lights reflected on the dark water. She stopped in front of the mirror before descending the steps of the ancient palace. The red mask covered her thoughts, leaving exposed only her gaze: an attentive eye, capable of reading the secrets of others without ever revealing her own. That was the last night. The last night she could be anyone, before dawn broke the spell of the carnival and forced her back to reality. She adjusted the black feathers on her head, stroked the dark necklace encircling her neck, and offered a captivating smile. Her scarlet lips would utter no promises, but only whispered farewells. A final breath, a final gaze fixed into the emptiness of the room. Then, with the elegance of a shadow, she turned toward the door, ready to lose herself for the last time in the mystery of the night.
